Book Review: The Little Manual for Spiritual Growth

Something I’ve been considering doing for a while now is reviewing some of the books I am reading.  This one I received from the Catholic Book of the Month club a while back and had the opportunity to read on a 3-day silent retreat in Saint Louis Missouri at the White House Retreat Center.  It’s a quick read, taking me only a few hours to finish.  I loaned it to a few friends and they too zipped through it.  Do I recommend it?  Most definitely.

Here is the just of it from my perspective: Father John Portavella walks us through the advice of Saint Jose Maria Escriva to give concrete examples of how to grow in holiness.  Life is full of anxieties and stresses, and with this simple plan, you can begin to alleviate some of that.   Will it make you a Saint?  I believe if you put it into action, have a concrete plan, and truly use the steps to allow God to work through you; then yes.  These aren’t quick fixes as much as a spiritual lifetime plan that is truly, as Saint Jose Maria says, is a matter of love God.
